This ALEA Hot Topic has been written in response to some of the questions both authors have been asked over the last three years.
The questions all relate to early reading instruction and have come from both teachers and community members. They have focused on four questions that seemed to be of particular concern. The first relates to how reading research is conducted and why different researchers come up with different answers to the question of how best to teach reading. Secondly, they address questions related to the science of reading, the Simple View of Reading, and claims that science has settled the debates on how reading should be taught (Hempenstall, 2016). Thirdly, they respond to questions about media coverage of the reading debates, and finally, they address questions about the National Reading Panel Report (NRPR, 2000) and how it fits into today’s reading discussions.
