MARGARET COSSEY

Margaret Cossey OAM was a specialist literacy teacher in both primary and secondary government and Catholic schools over a number of decades.

In the early 1990s she founded and was managing director of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander publishing company, Indij Readers Ltd., supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and adults to write and publish stories for use in literacy lessons in schools across Australia.

In 2009 Margaret resigned from Indij Readers and with a close friend, Dr Kelli McIntosh, a Murawari/Kooma woman, developed a training and publishing company for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults, TwoWay Talk Pty Ltd.  The company supported by the Commonwealth Government, developed vocational training packages to transition Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into employment.

Margaret has always been committed to working for justice for Australia’s First peoples in education, health, society and politics.
