I have been involved in the whole language movement since it began. Whole language is not opposed to phonics, but does not support “heavy” intensive phonics, an approach that demands that we teach all the major rules of phonics in a strict order. Whole language advocates understand, however, that some teaching of basic rules of phonics at beginning stages can be helpful in making texts more comprehensible.
