According to Professor Martin Mills, Research Professor in the School of Education at Queensland University of Technology and former high school teacher, “The teacher shortage issue is at crisis point in Australia.”
While rural and remote schools have long faced difficulties filling positions, Professor Mills says the shortage is now spreading into metropolitan areas. “In many rural and remote schools there are unfilled positions, leading to overcrowded classrooms, high school subjects not being offered and added stress being placed on principals and teachers. But it is not only rural and remote locations experiencing these shortages, but also many urban schools now.”
