Every year NAPLAN results in the predictable generation of headlines proclaiming successes or (mostly) failures in Australian education. This year has been no different. Much attention has focused on a small decline in Year 3 numeracy and seemingly high proportions of students not meeting standards.

But this summary has missed much of the real story. The real value of NAPLAN emerges when we move beyond the headline figures and interpret the data with greater nuance. Deeper interrogation of the data can uncover richer and more meaningful insights that can inform parents and families, schools and teachers, researchers, and policymakers.
